Evaluating ultrasound as a method for estimating the static modulus of elasticity and strength of Apuleia leiocarpa

Abstract:

Non-destructive methods are crucial for evaluating the mechanical properties of wood in heritage buildings. This study aims to assess the ultrasound method for obtaining the stiffness coefficient and compare it with the static modulus of elasticity parallel-to-grain obtained according to ABNT NBR 7190:2022. Additionally, it was sought to compare the static modulus of elasticity obtained from the conventional parallel-to-grain compression test with that obtained from the ultrasound result and to verify the correlations between these parameters and crushing strength. The evaluation was conducted using the species Apuleia leiocarpa. The result obtained for the stiffness coefficient was 1.31 times higher than that of the reference test, and among the evaluated parameters, these presented the best correlation. The result of the comparison between the conventional method and ultrasound for obtaining the static modulus of elasticity showed statistical equivalence; therefore, this technique has enormous potential for assessing historic wooden structures.
