Abstract:

The main function of oil heater in a petroleum industry is to heat the crude oil to a certain temperature for increasing the production separator efficiency. The aim of this work was to evaluate, in laboratory, the performance of metallic’s alloys in oil heater conditions to indicate the best material for this application, in terms of corrosion behavior. The aqueous solution employed in tests was composed by high chloride content, CO2, H2S and/or O2. pH, temperature and pressure were similar to shell and tubes heater exchanger’s operational conditions. The materials tested in autoclaves were carbon steel (ABNT 1020), ASTM A 213 grade T5 (T5) and ASTM A 213 grade T9 (T9). The results showed that T9 steels had the best performance in this environment even in presence of O2. However, it is essential to improve scaling precipitation in heat exchangers tubes and the entry of oxygen into the process plant, because this material is susceptible to crevice corrosion in presence of deposits and O2, and to localized corrosion in the presence of elementary sulfur (H2S reaction with O2).
