Preliminary assessment of energy potential of agricultural residues in Brazil

Abstract:

The use of agricultural residues as renewable energy sources represents an important strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening energy security. In Brazil, the high agricultural diversity and the large volume of lignocellulosic residues generated during harvesting and agro-industrial processing represent a significant opportunity for energy conversion. This study presents a preliminary assessment of the theoretical energy potential of eighteen agricultural residues associated with fourteen agricultural crops selected based on production data reported by the Municipal Agricultural Production Survey (PAM) for the year 2024. Residue availability, representativeness, and energy properties were obtained from literature sources and experimental databases developed by the research group. The results indicated that residues from sugarcane, corn, and soybean accounted for approximately 90% of the estimated theoretical energy potential in Brazil. Sugarcane bagasse and straw together represented approximately 5.07 x 106 TJ year-1. Cotton residues also showed relevant energy potential. Although residues such as cashew nut shell and coconut husk exhibited elevated Higher Heating Values (HHV), their limited availability resulted in lower theoretical energy potentials. Future studies should incorporate Lower Heating Value (LHV)-based assessments and physicochemical characterization to improve the accuracy of biomass energy evaluations in Brazil.
