Abstract:

The adequate selection of remediation Technologies for sites with presence of light non aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) requires a rational approach, involving detailed site characterization and appropriate understanding of the contaminants behavior. In the present work a complementary site investigation was conducted aiming the application of the method proposed by API (2004) for selecting the appropriate techniques of remediation. The results showed a significant influence of the oil characteristics on the remediation alternatives tested, which were confirmed by the low recovery rates observed in field pilot tests and by computer simulation. These information, combined with the absence of toxicological risk to human health, indicated that for a better efficiency of the remediation project and better resources allocation, an approach focused on the residual fraction would be technically more appropriate. The method used for decision making showed to be suitable for the present case.
