Abstract:

The objective of the present work is to determine the causes of perforations occurred in tubes of a recovery boiler. Some of these tubes, one of which was perforated, were submitted to characterization tests. Based on the results obtained from these tests, it was concluded that the perforation was due to the propagation of cracks, initiated from the external surface of the tube, reaching corrosion pits present in the internal surface. The internal pits were attributed to the aggressiveness of internal water, as sulfur was detected in the corrosion products. The external cracks were caused by fatigue corrosion. The cyclic stresses that provoked it were
