Analyses of termal fatigue in steels used in aluminum pressure die casting molds

Abstract:

One of the major challenges of the automotive industry is the reduction of gas emissions combined with greater energy efficiency in vehicles, meaning the use of low-density materials is increasingly demanded. Among them, aluminum appears as an interesting alternative for use in vehicle components, as it combines mechanical properties with complex design. One of the most used processes to obtain aluminum parts is the High PressureInjection Process (HPDC), requiring the use of injection molds subjected to high thermal cycles. These molds are expensive, so it is necessary to determine materials that adequately resists this thermal cycles of the process. The aim of this work was to investigate thermal fatigue in some of the most used materials in injections molds.Thermal fatigue tests were carried out on 5 different steels. As a conclusion, it was observed that the damage begins after 2,000 cycles, with differences occurring between the material.
