Abstract:

In the construction sector, the use of wood structures, in which Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) can be included, is related with the development of construction details, which allow the creation of water barriers. Specifically for CLT, as a protection against weather, usually, panels located in the building façade are enveloped with different materials, avoiding the appearance of pathologies associated with moisture. However, taking in account the natural appearance of wood, building envelopes are often undesirable from an aesthetical point of view and not using them can affect the panel´s durability, which is a fundamental requirement to assure the project life. CLT panels, as other building façade components, must be watertight, contributing to their durability and keeping the building´s interior spaces free from moisture. Therefore, the present paper aims to analyze, through laboratory tests, the water tightness of CLT panels fabricated with pinewood. The size of the samples was 1,20mx1,50mx0,08m. Two panes sealed with silicone building sealant formed each sample. The tests adopted the method suggested by ABT NBR15575:2013. The results revealed failure not only in the connection between panels, but also in the panel itself, reinforcing the need of further studies focusing on CLT panels’ water tightness for exterior use as building façades.
