Volatile corrosion inhibitors efficiency evaluation in the protection of the external storage tank botton: electrochemical techniques

Abstract:

This paper describes the preliminary results of potentiodynamic polarization tests conducted with the purpose to evaluate the corrosion protection efficiency of two commercial volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI) in protecting the external surface of the bottom of aboveground storage tanks. The tests were performed in salt solution (NaCl 0.1 mol.L-1) without addition of VCI (reference) and with the addition of VCI in the following concentrations: 1 %, 2 %, 3 % and 5 %. The tests showed that the VCI samples are anodic type inhibitors and that a concentrate ion higher than 2 % is needed to protect the steel against corrosion. For higher concentrations, the tests are being repeated due to interference problems that occurred during the polarization tests. The results also indicated the need to evaluate crevice corrosion susceptibility in the presence of VCI as well as the adequacy of the use of VCI in association with cathodic protection
