Effect of saound absorption in the performance of parallel acoustic barriers

Abstract:
Parallel noise barriers used to protect existing communities on both sides of a highway may cause an increase in noise level barrier on the community located on the opposite side of this barrier. Divers and passengers are also exposed to higher noise levels when passing by parallel noise barriers. The article aims to determine the impact of sound absorption in the acoustic barrier on the community located on the opposite side of this barrier. Drivers and passengers are also exposed to higher noise levels when passing by parallel noise barriers. The article aims to determine the impact of sound absorption in the acoustic barrier height and the comfort of dwellers, and people driving in a highway. Through the use of computer simulation, the sound pressure level was determined in the form of sound contour maps for each modification of the sound absorption which allowed comparison with the performance of reflective noise barriers of greater height. The results indicated that more sound absorptive barriers have better acoustic performance levels compared with reflective barriers of the same height. However, above a certain amount of absorption, gains on reduction of noise level are not as significant.
