Abstract:

The 2014 World Cup required new stadiums or major overhaul to existing ones. New materials and construction techniques such as tensile structures and poly-carbonates have allowed, on the one hand, the building of lighter roofs with longer clear spans. On the other, the design is more complex requiring better computational tools and more accurate prediction of wind loads. In this context wind tunnel testing is of paramount importance. The static wind loads obtained in wind tunnel tests of three types of stadium roofs are compared using the same surface roughness (category III terrain) with basic wind speed of 40 m/s and 1:200 model scale. The results show that the trapezoidal roof presented worst suctions near corners while elliptical roofs had the worst suctions in the vicinity of edges. As for over-pressure, in all cases it was usually much lower than typical values obtained for suction.
