Abstract:

The use of biomass in power generation has attracted enormous attention. Beyond being an ecological measure, it has been shown a profitable solution to burn biomass, instead for consider it waste. However, not all biomasses are suitable for burning, creating the need to analyze it before use. One of the main methods of analysis is the determination of heat of combustion, which reveals the thermal energy available in the materials for power generation. This method consists of two procedures: submission of biomass to a calorimeter, and quantification of hydrogen content. The percentage of hydrogen in the biomass composition reveals the amount of water that will be formed in the combustion, whereas this water when evaporated, consumes part of the heat released in the combustion, reducing the calorific value of biomass. Therefore, the correct determination of the percentage of hydrogen is critical to the correct energy and financial stipulation. Herein, this work focuses on in-depth study hydrogen determining technique, revealing its limitations, sources of error and main variations for different biomasses thus making that information safer and more precise.
