The behavior of zinc in saturated calcium hydroxide solution

Abstract:

The behavior of zinc in saturated calcium hydroxide solution, with and without addiction of 6% calcium chloride, was investigated by electrochemical and gravimetric tests. A singular behavior was observed on curves of corrosion potential variation with time, characterized by a sudden change in corrosion potential towards a more noble value after a variable transition time. Bubbling CO2, O2 or synthetic air through the solutions decreased drastically the transition time. The gravimetric tests showed that inly in chloride containing solution the mass loss is linear with time, leading to a corrosion rate of 4.9 mdd
