Abstract:

This paper presents a description of a study conducted to determine the causes of corrosion of a filter element used for cooking oil made of AISI-304 austenitic stainless steel. The filter element presented stress corrosion cracking which was a result of tensile residual stresses and of small levels of chlorides found in a product which was adhered to the surface of the filter element. The paper also presents possible countermeasures to prevent the development of this type of corrosion.
