Study of the effect of nanosilica and silica fume addition in mortars mechanical resistance

Abstract:

In recent years, the use of new technologies in civil construction has become frequent. An example of this is an addition of different materials to the concrete in order to improve its behavior in relation to some characteristics, such as mechanical resistance. Against this reality, the present work sought to evaluate the influence of three nanosilicas (A, B and C) and silica fume addition on mortars compressive strength. For this purpose, mortar specimens with proportion 1:3.2 and water/binder ratio of 0.4 were molded. The nanosilica contents used varied between 1 and 5%, according to the characteristics of each nanosilica used. The specimens were submitted to compressive strength tests at the ages of 7 and 28 days. The results indicated that the nanosilica B significantly influences the mortars’ compressive strength, reaching 72.2 MPa with 1% of nanosilica and 10% of silica fume addition, while the reference traces reached about 41 MPa at 28 days. The nanosílica C, with 1% content, also elevates the mortars’ compressive strength at 28 days, reaching 66.1 MPa.
