Integrating artificial intelligence into laboratory information management systems (LIMS): a case study of enhanced technical management

Abstract:

Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) play a critical role in the operational efficiency and compliance of testing and calibration laboratories, particularly concerning standards such as NBR ISO/IEC 17025. This article presents the development of a novel, modular LIMS framework incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to enhance data management and user interaction. Built on modern web technologies, the framework facilitates data management with a unique JSON schema, and allows for rapid adaptation to laboratory-specific processes, automatically generating interactive interfaces and integrating Lua scripts executed via WebAssembly for advanced calculations, such as Monte Carlo-based uncertainty estimations. The integration of AI, leveraging ChatGPT’s API, automates routine tasks by structuring data from unstructured inputs like texts and images. The practical implementation results demonstrate successful migration from legacy systems, with increased compliance, usability, and productivity.
