Abstract:

This study aims to evaluate the adhesive forces of calcium carbonate encrusted on the metallic surface of AISI 304 stainless steel through linear scratch tribological tests. The formation of mineral scale on metallic surfaces is a relevant phenomenon in several industrial sectors, such as the oil industry, heat exchanger systems, and pipelines, where particle adhesion can compromise operational efficiency and increase maintenance costs. To investigate this behavior, samples were prepared under different deposition conditions, in which CaCl₂ and NaHCO₃ solutions, with a controlled flow rate of 39 g/min, promoted the progressive adhesion of calcium carbonate. Different deposition times (30, 60, and 90 minutes) resulted in encrusted layers with varied thicknesses (100–300 micrometers), enabling the evaluation of the influence of time on the adhesive thickness of the material. In addition to deposition time, the samples were prepared with two types of surface finishing using sandpapers of grit sizes #80 and #1200, in order to assess the influence of roughness on calcium carbonate adhesion. The tests were conducted by scratch testing in the tribometer. For the scratch tests, 45 samples with dimensions of 30×6×0.5 mm were used. In the test, a diamond tip is displaced over the material surface under controlled load and speed conditions. During the procedure, the diamond tip, with standardized geometry and dimensions, applies a predefined normal force, generating a groove (scratch) on the material surface. The analysis of the tests allowed correlating the adhesion strength of calcium carbonate with the thickness of the encrusted layers and the critical failure force. The results contribute to a better understanding of the adhesion mechanisms of carbonate crystals on metallic surfaces and may support the development of new methodologies for scale removal, reducing negative impacts in industrial applications.
