Abstract:
Chromium-free black pigments are promising candidates for use in enamels for ceramic glazes and for heat-absorbing applications, such as the black bands on automotive windshields and rear windows. In this work, a black pigment from the SrO–Fe₂O₃–Mn₂O₃ system was synthesized by combustion reaction. The powders were heat-treated at 600 °C/1 h, 900 °C/3 h, and 1100 °C/3 h, and subsequently analyzed by qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The color properties of the pigments were characterized using CIELab colorimetric coordinates. Crystalline SrFeO₂.₅–₃.₀, SrFe₁₂O₁₉, and Sr(Fe₀.₉₅Mn₀.₀₅)O₂.₇₆ were identified as the predominant phases in the powders treated at 900 °C and 1100 °C. The color parameters of the enamel containing the powder treated at 900 °C were comparable to those of an enamel prepared with a commercial copper chromite black pigment widely used in the automotive industry.
