Abstract:
The production of construction materials stands as a pivotal industrial sector in Brazil and worldwide, wielding significant economic influence. However, it also significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and natural resource depletion. Thus, developing new bio-based construction materials emerges as a strategy to mitigate the carbon footprint and environmental impacts of this sector. This study aims to provide an overview of implementing two crucial biomass derivatives, biomass ashes, and biochar, in various construction materials such as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), lightweight aggregates, concrete formulations, mortars, insulation materials, etc. The assessment encompasses not only the mechanical, physico-chemical, and durability properties of these novel materials but also the importance of analyzing their generation and characteristics that could influence the development of new and more eco-friendly building materials. This includes considerations of the synthesis process (combustion and pyrolysis) and the key properties of ash and biochar.
