Abstract:
Recovering and recycling urban solid waste is still a great challenge for Brazilian municipalities, which have significant differences in technical, economic, and management capacities to implement selective collection schemes. Small municipalities often present fewer resources and weaker management structures, therefore requiring different waste management strategies than the ones implemented in larger municipalities. The aim of the present study is to apply and evaluate strategies for the implementation of selective collection of recyclables and environmental education in Itapirapuã Paulista, a small municipality located in the southwest of the State of São Paulo, the largest state of Brazil. The study consisted of evaluating the existing waste management system in Itapirapuã Paulista; assessing the demands and perceptions of the local population about the selective collection of recyclables; performing the gravimetric characterization of the municipal solid waste; defining the strategies for the implementation of selective collection of recyclables and environmental education actions; and implementing the defined strategies and monitoring the results. The study indicated that selective collection strategies for small municipalities should be planned and implemented considering the needs presented by the target population, based on simple and cost-effective solutions, which will facilitate the adoption of the proposed strategies and the operation and maintenance of the system by the municipality. It is also important to constantly maintain environmental education programs and actions, and consider the feedback from residents about the strengths and weaknesses of the implemented strategies, to guarantee the long-term success of selective collection.
