Is open circuit potential a suitable parameter to assess corrosion behaviour of galvanized reabrs in marine environment?

Abstract:

This work is a contribution on verifying if open circuit potential values can be used to assess the state of corrosion of galvanized rebars in marine environments. For this purpose, measurements of the open circuit potential of zinc/carbon steel and zeta-phase/carbon steel galvanic couples were performed in a saturated-calcium-hydroxide solution without and with chloride contamination. The latter simulates a pore solution of a reinforced concrete exposed to marine atmospheres. Samples with two different proportions of exposure areas of each metal were tested. Zn, zeta-phase alloy and carbon steel were also tested individually. Tests were also performed using chromate-treated galvanized steel bars in prismatic concrete specimens contaminated with chloride. The obtained results, together with data collected from the literature, were used to answer the proposed question
