Abstract

Mercury is a naturally occurring element found in three ionic forms, Hgº; Hg + and Hg ++. The proportion of Hg0 in the soil is a function of the redox potential, the adsorption of organic matter and clay, and the concentration of the ions I-, Cl- and Br-. Natural mercury concentrations in soil range 0.02 to 0.5 mg / kg, usually less than 0.1 mg / kg. In an industrial area in the state of São Paulo, infiltration and sedimentation ponds were built, not waterproofed, receiving reactors wash effluent from the production process of a company. These contaminated effluents were mainly mercury (II oxide) with an average of 34.7 mg / kg and benzene. This paper presents the results obtained from tests through batch tests in a sample collected in points with higher concentrations of mercury, with 414.10 mg / kg. The study aimed to quantify the transfer of mercury contamination to liquid solutions with different pH. The samples remained in contact with these solutions at pH 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 in different time periods, with 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours. Concentrations transferred to the solutions ranged from <0.200 to 4.360 g / L, with a greater potential for leaching solutions with pH 2 and 3, independent of the contact time of the sample.
