Torrefaction of sugar cane bagasse

Abstract:

Biomass, as renewable energy source, is one of the worlds main research and discussion topics. This is mainly because bio-fuels burning does not generate green-house gases and biomass sources are not finite. At IPT, we have a research project concerning entrained flow gasification of sugar cane bagasse, which is this works motivation. The chosen gasification technology works with liquid or sub-milimeter solid fuels and, for latter, bagasse needs to be milled. The mlling of in-natura bagasse is not economically and technically advantageous, because it consumes high amounts of energy and generates needle-shaped particles instead of round-shaped ones, needed for the gasifier stable operation. One the alternatives to change biomass structure and properties, making it use more viable, is torrefaction ( a thermal treatment run at temperatures below 300°C and free-O2 atmosphere). One of the advantages is the grindability enhancement, due to cellulosic structure breakage. This work will present a bibliographic review on torrefaction, containing its chemistry, mass and energy balance and recent technology developments. Also, laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate bagasse torrefaction behavior in five different temperatures (180, 210, 240, 270 and 300°C) and for two different periods (10 and 30 minutes). Torrefied bagasse characterization was by elemental and proximate analysis, and low heating values determination. Grindability was determined for 30 minutes experiment samples through the HardgroveGrindability Indez (HGI).
