Eletrochemical study of carbon steel in pure ethanol: the influence of the distance between the working and quasi-reference electrods and of the immersion time on the EIS measurements

Abstract:
Electrochemical tests in ethanol are complex and require a great attention during their implementation and their interpretation. In this study, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique (EIS) was chosen for studying carbon steel in pure ethanol because this technique allows testing metallic materials in low conductivity media. However according to the literature, there are artifact interferences attributed to the reference electrode in the high frequency range when tests are conducted in very low conductivity media [1, 2]. These artifacts can also influence the answers obtained in low frequency ranges [2]. Unfortunately, unlike the tests carried out in aqueous solutions, the choice of a reference electrode for nonaqueous media is not yet fully established. A possible option is the use of a quasi-reference electrode (QRE) [3]. This work presents the electrochemical studies conducted with carbon steel in pure ethanol using the EIS technique and a quasi-reference electrode. Both the effect of the distance between the quasi-reference electrode and the working electrode (WE) as well as the corrosion behavior of carbon steel in pure ethanol for 55 days are discussed.
