Verificação da ocorrência de corrosão em frestas em etanol anidro por meio de ensaios de imersão

The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence of crevice corrosion of low carbon steel in ethanol fuel. Ethanol samples, collected at different point of REPLAN Refinery, and an imported ethanol sample were tested. The immersion tests were carried out for 21 days and absolute ethanol was used for comparison, under three different atmospheres: forced aeration, natural aeration and deaeration (nitrogen atmosphere). Conducted with REPLAN-ethanol samples and with absolute ethanol under forced and natural aeration, no sign of corrosion was observed on the carbon steel specimens whether at the free surfaces or in the crevices. In tests conducted under a deareated condition, all REPLAN-ethanol samples presented dark spots only in the crevices. Under the latter condition, no sign of corrosion was observed in the crevices under the three tested atmospheres. Analyses were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) associated with elemental microanalyses (EDS) which detected sulfur (S) at the corroded sites. This result indicates that the contamination of the ethanol by sulfur compounds favors the occurrence of crevice corrosion.
