Abstract:

This paper presents the geoenvironmental characterization of a contaminated site, located in the municipality of Santo André, São Paulo State, Brazil. The objective is to determine experimental parameters that allow the study of some aspects of the transport organochlorine pesticide hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH). The study area contains approximately 30,000 tons of material result of a process of rectification of a stream, which showed the presence of pesticide residues in industrial HCH containing high concentrations. In 2011, disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected at four different points of the contaminated site, and later a sample of the soil layer of rock alteration (SAR) was also composed to characterize. The geotechnical characterization was based on laboratory tests conducted by the following analyzes: grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, porosity, moisture content, water retention curve and hydraulic conductivity. For geochemical characterization were carried out as follows: pH, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic matter content and volatile content. This characterization will subsidize HCH transport studies needed to support the management of public health decisions and remediation area. Preliminary results indicate the dispersion of the pesticide in low concentrations in soil at superficial and deep layer, both with different characteristics.
