Abstract:

In this paper, the preliminary results of a study conducted with two commercial volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI) in protecting the external surface of the bottom of storage tanks setting on concrete base are presented. Initially, tests were conducted with the objective to evaluate their corrosion protection ability in vapor phase and to determine their chemical composition. Then, they were tested in a partial immersion condition, with and without crevice formers, using a NaCl solution and a sample of produced water. The obtained results showed good corrosion protection efficiency in vapor phase of both VCI samples and the need of 5 % in a NaCl solution and 15 % in a produced water medium for a good corrosion efficiency. The tests also showed the susceptibility of the metallic coupon to crevice corrosion, especially when one of the VCI samples was added to the test medium.
