Abstract:

Pipelines for petroleum and derivatives as well as industrial water pipelines are permanently subject to corrosion due to the aggressiveness of the transported fluids. Even in pipelines internally coated, corrosion problems of the welded joints can occur, since there are many difficulties in coating these regions. In this work, aluminum coating and zinc coating were applied by thermal spraying (TSA, TSZ) and the efficiency of the coatings as galvanic anodes to protect welded joints was studied. The consumption rate of the coatings was evaluated by weight loss as well as by the determination of the galvanic current of the couple coating/carbon steel, using immersion tests in produced water and synthetic sea water. The study results showed that zinc and aluminum coatings were effective as galvanic anodes for cathodic protection of carbon steel welded joints. For applications at conditions representative of produced water, the zinc coating was superior to the aluminum one. Under typical conditions of sea water, the aluminum coating was more efficient.
