Abstract:
This is the companion paper to former work aiming to understand, quantitatively and qualitatively, the difference between the industrial disk refiner and PFI mill, and to better understand the action of refining in this type of mill. The physical properties of handsheets of pulp refined by both refiners were compared and it was possible to verify the variation of the physical properties of the pulp in different times of refining in mill PFI and disc, so that the answers in characteristics of the pulp refined in PFI mill could be better understood. Finally these differences are analyzed and discussed for each physical property. In the present paper the morphological changes of the fiber under refining action are discussed by analysis of fiber length distribution, fines and vessels, coarseness, shape factors, and microscopic images including the transversal (cross sectional) SEM images.
