Photometric testing of lighting sources and fixtures

A lighting project requires knowledge of the characteristics of light sources and lighting fixtures, so that they can be applied adequately for the desired purpose. IPT performs a number of lighting tests, most of them following the NBS 250-20, NBR 9503, and NBR 15111 standards, which provide data on the photometric curve, light source intensity, and color temperature.

The most frequently requested tests are:
  • Photometric curve for light fixtures. The data obtained allow for the correct preparation of lighting projects for streets and public spaces.
  • Reflectance of adhesive reflective films. Widely used for signaling in vehicles, the minimum reflective values must comply with those established by DENATRAN (National Transportation Department) regulations.
  • Transmittance of glass and plastics. Important for the characterization of protective films for various applications, e.g., windows.
  • Spectral distribution and intensity of light bulbs. Used to determine the color reproduction index of bulbs in order to avoid discomfort and altered color perception due to exposure to these bulbs.
  • Luminous flux of light bulbs. Allows for estimation of the number of light bulbs needed to illuminate a given area.
Photometric characteristics of LED traffic lights. The traffic departments of each city specify the minimum characteristics which LED traffic lights must present. The main differences are directivity and energy economy.
