Technical and economic feasibility to use alloyed steel bars and hot-dip zinc coated bars in reinforced concrete structures with carbonation-induced corrosion

The guarantee of project durability of reinforced concrete structures is a matter of concern in Brazil, given the history of early pathological manifestations and the high cost of repairs and rehabilitation that are required. As carbon steel corrosion is today one of the significant pathological manifestations of reinforced concrete structures, an adequate durability with superior performance concrete and steel must be ensured. The use of reinforcement with superior corrosion resistance is common practice in other countries, but incipient in Brazil (a few civil works were performed with special reinforcements). Thus, the present work evaluates the feasibility of using carbon steel with additional elements and galvanized reinforcement (already used in Brazil), replacing the standard carbon steel reinforcement. The surface treatment condition of carbon steel reinforcement to be used in the corrosion tests was established in exploratory tests performed in a laboratory. The corrosion tests were initiated after the complete carbonation of bars embedded in concrete. The evaluation of corrosion was performed through open circuit potential measurements and corrosion rate determination adopting galvanostatic pulse method. By understanding the constraints of each material and its cost effectiveness, it was concluded that it is technically and economically feasible to use a superior corrosion-resistant alloyed steel as well as using hot-dip zinc coated bars as alternatives to ensure longer life of reinforced concrete structures in urban environments.
