Electrochemical behaviour of 22MnB5 steel coated with hot-dip Al-Si Before and after hot-stamping process by meams of SKPFM measurements

Abstract:

Press-hardened steels are commonly protected with metallic coatings (e.g. hot-dip Al-Si). Due to the electrochemical complexity of these systems, either before or after hot-stamping process, SKPFM was used to investigate, locally, the influence of the thermo-mechanical process on the electrochemical behaviour of the galvanic coupling. The Volta-potential difference between the steel substrate and coating layer before hot stamping was around 350 mV. After hot stamping, this Volta-potential difference decreased to 66 mV. The hot-stamping process changed significantly the anodic/cathodic coupling of the Al-Si coating/steel not only due to microstructural changes but also due to iron enrichment in the coating layer.
