Biomass and densification technologies for energy application

Compartilhe:
Abstract:

The mitigation of environmental impacts caused by the expressive use of fossil fuels has become increasingly urgent, and its replacement inevitable. Biomass presents itself as a promising renewable source of energy, which is demonstrated by the percentage of participation of biomass in the Brazilian energy matrix, in the order of 9% of the total of about 83%. This represents 15,118 MW produced by 572 biomass plants, with emphasis on the use of sugarcane bagasse. However, due to its heterogeneity and low bulk density, its use in natural state presents energy disadvantages when compared to oil or coal, for example. Thus, the present work included the assessment of the technical viability of densification, by pelletizing and briquetting, of three different biomasses: wood sawdust, cane bagasse, and tree pruning. The dense products showed higher energy density compared to biomass in the natural state, satisfactory values of mechanical durability, indicating that it is possible to obtain densified products with handling resistance and high energy density from the evaluated biomasses. However, it became evident that factors such as particle size and moisture have an important impact on the type of densification technology to be used, directly affecting the quality of the product, as well as the process route to be used. The choice of the best configuration of process parameters and the characteristics required in the preparation of the biomass to be densified are determining factors for the technical and economic viability of using this type of material as an energy source.
