Simulation of the environmental impact generated by degradation of cell phones sent to landfills

Abstract:

Growth of population and rapid development of new technologies are mainly responsible for the increase of waste electrical and electronic equipment generation (WEEE). These residues are characterized by a very high complexity and, when not properly managed, cause environmental and human health problems. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the generation of volatile compounds and the mass of methane from WEEE through simulation of the accelerated landfill conditions. The tests were performed using acrylic vessels, placed in incubator at 35 °C ± 2 °C, 65 % of humidity and 4 months incubation according to adapted ASTM D5526 Method. Each vessel contained the fractions of the samples (display, printed circuit board and cell phone housing), pretreated-household waste and methanogenic inoculum. The chemical analyses for metals showed that the metal concentration after the incubation period were below the USEPA screening levels. The gas production was not influenced by metals presence, however, other influences, like oxygen concentration and pH value seemed to inhibided the growth of anaerobic microrganisms.
