Abstract:
The use of the "Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems – EIFS" with rendering began in Europe and USA having in account its potential to enhance the thermal comfort of buildings, lowering energy consumption for artificial air conditioning. On Brazil, EIFS’ adoption is relatively recent (around 2010), though not necessarily by its thermal advantages. This article presents the main characteristics of the components that make up EIFS (adhesive, insulation product end base-coat); and that influence the bond strength and, consequently, the performance on exposure to mechanical stress. For so, there were made bibliographical researches and case-studies to understand the projects and processes of assembly of EIFS at external walls and facades. The results here presented are part of a master’s thesis. EIFS must not be executed without minimal mechanical anchors, even though that they work as complements to the adhesive. Other performance requirements still need to be research to subsidize the analysis of the technical viability of the use of this system on Brazil.
