Characterization of the interface between HSS shell and grey cast iron core in cast bimetallic components

Abstract:

Laboratory scale experiments were carried out to simulate the formation of the interface between HSS shell and cast iron core, both statically cast. The experiments comprised, basically, the pouring of charges of grey cast iron inside pre-heated HSS crucibles and the subsequent cooling to room temperature. The HSS crucibles with OD=85mm, ID=52mm and h=150mm dimensions were heated up to temperatures ranging from 1100ºC to 1250ºC, while the 2.5 kg cast iron charges were poured at temperatures ranging from 1340ºC to 1400ºC. The resultant interfaces were characterized through optical and scanning electron microscopes, as well as through EDS and WDS microanalyses.
