Abstract:
Conceptually, it is important to distinguish between laminar flow erosion and accelerated linear erosion processes involving the movement of large masses of soil and sediment, known in Brazil as rills, ravines and gullies. To better understand erosion processes, it is necessary to seek for theoretical basis from different authors with diversified background that work with soil erosion. Knowledge of the behavior of linear erosive processes allows highlighting two types with the greatest importance in prevention and control, which are the ravines and gullies. Therefore, there is considerably prominence in distinguishing between ravine and gully. Gullies involve more extensive measures for its containment, often requiring engineering works, mainly when they reach urban areas, roads, railways etc. Erosion is one of the greatest natural hazards due to the major economic, environmental and social damage; This hazard is no novelty, since Incas and Chinese continuously employed agricultural terraces in order to control floods, thus preventing erosion onset. In Brazil, erosion has been generating rural and urban losses, through arable land losses, damage to infrastructure, urban areas degradation and aggradation of watercourses.
