Laboratory tests performed of volatile corrosion inhibitors for the protection of the external surface of aboveground storage tank

Abstract:

This paper describes laboratory tests performed for the selection of volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) to be used for the protection of the external surface of aboveground storage tank bottoms in direct contact with a concrete base. Two VCIs were pre- selected and evaluated with different concentration through electrochemical techniques and immersion tests, using a sample of produced water and a NaCl solution as electrolytes. During the electrochemical tests, a preferential corrosion was observed in crevices formed between the working electrode and its holder. Therefore a specific test was carried out in order to verify the susceptibility to crevice corrosion in the presence of the both inhibitors. The results of immersion and electrochemical tests showed that the effective control of corrosion is especially dependent on the concentration IVCS and environmental aggression. Inhibitors diffuse into the concrete, and the variable values between them were found in solution and powder face. The ability to protect against the crevice corrosion was found.
