Abstract:
Organochlorine pesticides were used in large scale in the world to control pests. The movement of these pollutants into the porous medium is conditioned not only by the groundwater flow, although this is main process of transport of it. The behavior of the pollutants in the subsoil is dependent of the physical, chemical and biological natural mechanisms. Geological, hydrogeological, geochemical and geotechnical studies are needed to provide data for mapping of the pollutants flow, based on a geo-environmental investigation. This work presents the main geo-environmental aspects of the behavior of organochlorine pesticide hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH). The adsorption of pesticides by the organic soil matter is the main mechanism that influences the transport and extension of the contamination plumes, making fundamental the geochemical and geotechnical characterization. The transport of organochlorine pesticides occurs primarily through erosion and runoff, and sometimes, by dissolution and deposition in the deeper and permeable layers of the subsoil. The mobility of the pesticides is considered low when compared to other pollutants, however HCH can be considered mobile as compared to other organochlorine pesticides, because it presents the greater solubility and the lesser adsorption capacity between them.
