The co-ordinate metrology is largely used in several industries due to is its flexibility in part measurements with different geometric and sizes, but also for its high accuracy and for the possibility of tank automation using software, among others. However, similarly to others measurement systems it is influenced by several factors that generate errors and uncertainties in the measured results, such as the operator, the workpiece, the measurement strategy and the environment. There are several ways to evaluate and qualify these errors in coordinate measurements, each of them providing different performance information that primary emphasize some particular aspects of the evaluated machine. Given the differences in the content of the information by brought by different performance tests, this paper compares the information provided by tests according to ASME ANSI B89.4.1b (2001), with those obtained via calibrations with a laser interferometer (Orrego, 1999). The result of this comparison supports a better understanding on the sources of machine variability and this implication on the final machine performance, particularly when the knowledge about errors and uncertainties is necessary in the manufacturing context.
