Galvanic corrosion of bronze pumps used for sea water propulsion

Abstract:

This paper describes a study conducted to determine the causes of severe corrosion observed in bronze pumps used for the propulsion of seawater for ship engine cooling. The impeller of the pumps was coated with hard chromium in the region close to the diffusers. Galvanic corrosion was observed both in the impeller as well as in the diffusers. A discussion of the results is presented.
