Environmental aspects and impacts assessment associated with sewage treatment by treatment by activated sludge

Abstract:

The dumping of untreated sewage into water bodies is a major cause of environmental pollution.
Although the need for sewage treatment process is undeniable, this also raises environmental
impacts such as the generation of residues, among which the sludge is the more impactful. Within
this context, this paper aims to assess a sewer treatment plant in relation to its environmental aspects and impacts associated with a hierarchy of significance based on a sheet of aspects and impacts. The object of study was the Franca’s plant, in the State of São Paulo that uses the conventional activated sludge process and treats predominantly domestic sewage. For each step of the process were identified inputs and outputs, to establish the environmental aspects of the different stages of sewage treatment: solid waste, inputs, air emissions, effluents, noise and raw materials. The environmental impacts – consequences that these aspects cause to the environment – were analyzed considering the severity, extent and probability of occurrence. The aspect energy consumed got the largest index of prioritization, manifesting its impact by using natural resources. In the sequence we highlight the aspects environmental effluents and dewatered sludge
