Abstract:

A failure case history of an AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel tube used for handling cleaning products in a beverage industry is reported. After two years of use the tube was leaking due to stress corrosion cracking. The cracks stated at the outside face of the tube which was thermally insulated with expanded polyurethane. The stress corrosion was escribed to the relatively high chloride content of the insulation.
