IPT´s Laboratory for Corrosion and Protection is able to perform microstructural characterizations of metallic materials and coatings, both microstructured or nanostructured. The Lab has modern infrastructure including several types of equipment for conducting a broad spectrum of metallographic and surface analyses such as:
• traditional optical microscopes, used for metallographic characterizations of metallic materials;
• a white light confocal microscope for measurements and analyses of the geometry and roughness of surfaces;
• an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) in conjunction with a Raman microscope for analyses and chemical characterizations of microstructured and nanostructured surfaces;
• a Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG/SEM) which allows obtaining magnifications up to 1,000,000 times; determining chemical elements by X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and by X-ray wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS) and determining the crystal structure of the sample by electron backscatter diffraction analyses (EBSD).
