Chemical characterization and quality control of metallic materials

Chemical characterization is an important tool for determining the composition of a metal or metal alloy.

Using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry for qualitative analysis, IPT identifies the chemical composition of ferrous alloys such as: carbon steel, stainless steel, tool steel, high-speed steel, cast iron, copper, zinc, aluminum, nickel and silver alloys, titanium alloy for use in prostheses, stainless steels used in surgical implants and other materials.

After each compound in a given alloy has been identified, the content of these elements can be quantified and the alloy classified according to its chemical composition, or checked to ascertain if the material complies with a given technical specification.

The purity of materials such as silver, copper, zinc and aluminum can be determined using following techniques:
  • Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES)
  • Optical emission spectrometry
  • X-ray fluorescent spectrometry
  • Combustion
