Abstract

This work presents a study on the lateral soil-pipe interaction in sandy soils, through centrifugal tests, in partially buried pipes subjected to lateral dragging. Initially, characterization and shear strength tests were performed in the previously selected sand sample. The centrifuge tests were performed in the COPPE/UFRJ mini centrifuge acquired in 2012. The lateral drag of the pipe in the soil was conducted after the stabilization of the stress state. This procedure simulated a condition of dragging after a certain time of pipe installation on the seabed. Tests were performed using a scale factor of 33 g, which simulates a pipe with an outside prototype diameter of 300 mm, buried at a depth of H / D = 25% and H / D = 50%. Additionally, the influence of the displacement pipe speed was evaluated using values of 0.5 mm / s and 5 mm / s. The horizontal forces versus pipe dragging curves show the trenching and thus the development of the berms with cycling movements. Although a clear trend has not been perfectly defined, the study made it possible to establish upper limit and lower limit values for the normalized horizontal force, considering the lateral dragging up to 3 times the pipe diameter.
