Abstracts:
To evaluate the applicability of the Lie Cycle Assessment (LCA) technique to compare the environmental performance of two means of urban transport: Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT). It was defined a scope for the study, a common functional unit and conducted an inventory of mass and energy flows. After reviewing the inventories, simulations were conducted to analyze the impacts of both systems by modeling them with the CML 2001 and Eco indicator 99. Based on the conclusions developed within the limits of this study, it can be stated that: VLT has a better response to environmental indicators of acidification, eutrophication, depletion of nonrenewable natural resources and respiratory diseases while both systems shown greenhouse gas emissions in quite similar quantities. The technique of LCA is applicable as a tool for decision support on urban transit specifications and also to assist designers in the transportation sectors aiming to choose appropriate equipment and materials to migrate environmental impacts
