Abstract:
The aim of this work is to discuss methodological aspects related to the application of cradleto- gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to assess the environmental performance of construction products. The methodology consists of a review of standards and references about LCA, followed by primary data collection in order to develop life cycle inventories of construction products. This work presents the case study of the structural concrete block. The following methodological aspects are discussed: aim and scope definition; primary data collection; secondary data collection and adaptation; allocation; uncertainties; environmental impact indicators calculation and precautions in the disclosure of results. We conclude that, besides the complexity, when properly carried out, LCA allows an objective assessment of the environmental performance of building products, being thus able to subsidize better decision making based on environmental criteria.
