Abstract:

The glucose oxidation is an important alternative route for organic acids production from renewable sources. Among these acids are gluconic and glucaric acids, which have several industrial applications. This work reports the production of a mixed-oxide catalyst derived from a hydrotalcite (HT) with Pd/MgAl and its application in the catalytic oxidation of glucose with O2. Both the precursor, obtained by coprecipitation of the metallic nitrates, and the calcined catalyst were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence (XRD and FRX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS). The XRD analysis showed the structure of HT precursor and its transformation to PdO, MgO e Al2O3 after calcination. The N2 adsorption indicated that calcination increased the area to 159,55 m2/g and the predominance of macropores in the catalyst. SEM-EDS reveal the plate morphology and the uniform distribution of the metals at the solid surface. Glucose conversion profiles obtained in isothermal steps between 50 °C and 80 °C indicated that the catalyst is active in the reaction especially above 70 °C.
