Abstract:
This paper discusses the long-term foundation settlement on basal sands, taking Copan, a building located in the central region of São Paulo city, in Brazil, as an example. Since Copan´s inauguration, foundation settlements caused some damages to the building (cracks), but they did not compromise the building performance up to this point. Investigations to determine the causes of this phenomenon indicated that the foundation settlements result from the immediate elastic deformation and slow deformations (consolidation) of clay layers existing in the so-called "São Paulo´s basal sands". The results of settlement monitoring allow an evaluation of the speed at which such settlements develop, as well as their possible effects on the building, showing no evidence that the displacements of Copan building have already stabilized.
