Grain refinement of hadfield steel by the addition of hafnium (HF)

Abstract:

This paper presents the effect of controlled addition of Hf and deoxidation with Al for reducing the austenitic grain size of Hadfield steel (12 % Mn, 1.2 %C and 0.65 % Si). Macrostructural characterization showed that the Hf-treated cast Hadfield steel showed a mean grain size of 340 µm and the Al/Hf-treated Hadfield a mean grain size of 280 µm, while the reference condition presented a mean grain size of 2000 µm. Particles of Al2O3 and HfC were found in the EDS / MEV analyzes indicating that they can act as a substrate for the nucleation of austenite.
